Is it possible for YOU to eat your way out of depression?!
![]() This question arose during an interview on a RadioRescue segment on The Best People We Know Show prompted by a 'latest science' article which said that there's no evidence you can eat your way out of a depressive downturn. LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE In contrast to the article, Dr Alex had clear reasons for thinking that attention to diet and appropriate nutritional supplementation may be of great value to people who are depressed. She went on to tackle the 'how to' of that in a separate show (but first, be sure to follow through to the e'Read More' below to get the key learnings for this one!) Here she raised important points about New Medicine... and how to determine whether YOU are likely to be someone for whom the diet approach can help. She said, ‘It’s really unhelpful if we are led to cast aside the positive opportunities we have to help ourselves, just because an article misplaces its focuses’. One of Dr Alex’s bugbears is what she calls ‘shoddy science’, which, she says, goes hand-in-glove with poor or improper use of available information. She is keen to help our listeners interrogate research better, to get more out of science…. to dig deeper into what has been found, and to get to use science more appropriately for their own individual purposes. So she’s especially keen to point out that an article that asks the ‘wrong’ question will inevitably produce the ‘wrong’ answer! Unpacking The Depression ‘Generally speaking, the way that I look at something like depression, is that I ‘unpack’ the problem and look at the individual’, says Dr Alex. ‘I need to know what is in the ‘soup’ of the depression that they have.’ ‘There are three big categories to consider. So the first question to ask is: is there PREDOMINANTLY: 1. A psychological challenge, or 2. Is it biological? Or, 3. Is there a contextual challenge (e.g. new or ‘impossible’ demands, or a trigger)? All these are, of course, inter-connected, but what’s key is to focus on the challenge that has actually caused this depression to manifest in this person, when working out to what extent a changed diet or nutritional supplementation can help this depression to be resolved. Which of these is likely to apply to YOU?! Keep reading... |
